WHAT IS A REMAP/CHIP TUNING?

Engine Control UnitToday's modern cars are computer controlled by an ECU or "engine control unit".

The ECU contains the software that controls the fuel delivery, ignition timing and essentially dictates to the engine what the driver is asking of the car.

 

Chip-Tuning optimises, or rewrites these programs onto the ECU. These programs change the fuel delivery maps and boost pressure on turbocharged or supercharged cars. As a result, the engine will run more efficiently as well as have increased horsepower and much better torque figures.

The standard manufacturer maps are designed for models that need to meet different quality’s of fuel worldwide, countries that may also have stricter emission controls and for countries at different altitudes with differing air quality. Servicing intervals recommended by the manufacturers are also different dependant on country. To save cost and rather than produce a different ECU for each country, an ECU is produced in volume and made to satisfy these legislations in all countries, limiting the cars potential in countries like ours where fuel quality is good, emission requirements are less than in other countries and our air quality is very good.

Essentially – the chips and remaps we sell will make your car drive and perform as it should. Whether you’re a GTI owner wanting more performance, or you cover mileages where fuel consumption is paramount, a remap/chip makes a lot of sense.

On average, turbocharged vehicles will achieve between a 20 to 40 % increase in horsepower and a remarkably stronger torque curve. In non turbocharged cars the performance increase will be between 6% and 8%. The acceleration and top speed will be hugely improved together with better fuel consumption.

There maybe other firms that offer two or three horsepower more, but we believe this is at the expense of torque – or in gear performance. With APR and Wetterauer chips/remaps the torque curve is a nice smooth curve mirroring the standard curve – only at a lot higher figure. This extra torque will see, in most instances, the car deliver it’s power more smoothly than even the factory settings and in the all important 50 – 70mph overtaking bracket, the extra torque delivers huge gains.
